Should You Give Up On Your Dream?
Do you have a dream that you have been struggling to manifest?
Maybe you’ve been trying hard to reach that same goal for months or years, and you have done everything you could think of...
and it just hasn’t happened for you.
It’s soooo frustrating and undermining to your confidence to have a dream and not be able to reach it. When you feel incapable of managing your goals, especially the important ones, your ego has a hay-day, and can really undermine your belief in yourself, and wear out your motivation.
There can be all kinds of reasons why your dream has not manifested. But rather than to keep on doing the same efforts over and over, it’s helpful to take a closer look at what you REALLY need,
or come up with a new goal altogether.
What does your dream really mean to you?
We have different levels of needs and desires. One of the most vital is having our emotional (or other) needs met.
Consider this: what emotional need will be fulfilled by achieving your dream?
What will you get out of it that makes it both so darn enticing and yet so elusive?
(*** Take a minute and really think about it, what do you gain emotionally when you are living your dream?)
For me, it’s about feeling successful (self-esteem) and especially connected to others on an emotional level.
My dream-goal represents my unique way of making this happen, by creating & connecting with others.
But- that is just one way of fulfilling that particular emotional need.
I could also choose to :
- Go hang-out with my friends. Have a regular girls night out.
- Join a meet-up group and make new friends.
- Go home and visit family and my hometown.
- Get on Facebook and join in a like-minded community
- Find a corporate job with a great working environment
- Start working as a volunteer for a cause I care about.
- Join a company I feel strongly identified with.
Many Roads Lead to Rome
Take a moment to think about how to fulfill your emotional need in other do- able ways.
When I bomb out on my big dream, I’m wearing down my self-esteem and confidence in connecting to others. So it’s really important for me to be clear on whether this particular goal is the only one that can fulfill my desire for connection to others.
There are 101 ways to experience that goal on an emotional level.
What fresh ideas can you come up with that can deliver your desire for fulfillment?
Is it time to let your dream go?
Now that you know where your emotional needs are, you can take a fresh look at your dream and evaluate if it’s time to let it go - or revise it into an attainable goal.
Is there anything that stands out in terms of your development and skills?
And, are you willing to grow in that way?
Is there a short-term goal that needs to be realized in order to get to your bigger dream?
If your dream was elusive because of a lack of a particular skill or resource, consider setting one careful goal to get to your bigger dream.
